Accounting at NUI Galway
The accounting profession has experienced dramatic growth in size and status over the last twenty five years. The demand for accounting graduates is high and career prospects are both excellent and varied. At NUI Galway we provide both an undergraduate and a postgraduate accounting degree to facilitate our students’ entry and advancement in the accounting profession. At undergraduate level, the B.Comm (Accounting) provides our students with both a solid business education and a tailored accounting programme designed to develop the skills needed to become a professional accountant and a trusted business advisor. While many students are recruited directly into the profession at the end of their undergraduate studies, an elite group progresses to our Master of Accounting degree, offered through the Cairnes Graduate School of Business and Public Policy here at NUI Galway.
Many of our graduates complete their professional training while employed in accounting firms which provide accounting, audit and taxation services, and are a vital source of advice to all sizes and types of business. Once qualified, some of our graduates remain in professional practice while others move on to employment in a diverse range of industries from manufacturing to financial services. Whether trained through practice or industry, the salaries are excellent and many accountants use their professional qualification as a springboard to top management positions. Professional accountants are found on the majority of boards of directors of the country’s largest and most successful businesses.
The accounting programmes at NUI Galway are staffed by a team of nine full-time, dedicated lecturers. All of the staff have outstanding academic records and hold professional qualifications. Lectures are enhanced by extensive practical examples drawn from a wealth of commercial experience in practice and industry. We maintain excellent relationships with the professional institutes and accounting firms. This enables us to advise students in progressing their careers, attract a variety of interesting speakers to the university and keep programme content right up to date.
